Shipping Savard out of Boston: Good move, bad timing

Uncategorized 1 Comment

Savard's time in Boston could soon be over.

As the trade talks around Bruins’ No. 1 center Marc Savard continues, the thought of losing one of the NHL’s premiere set-up men after drafting Tyler Seguin just a few nights ago is enough to make most Black-and-Gold backers pull their hair out.

The day after picking Seguin second overall in Friday night’s 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the Bruins dealt center and impending RFA Vladimir Sobotka to the St. Louis Blues for defensive prospect David Warsofky, opening up a possible third-line center slot for Seguin if in fact Savard is shipped out soon. If the point of dealing the Bruins power-play pivot is to clear cap-space ($4M) then we already know the Bruins won’t get equal value for No.91.

The Bruins currently have five roster forwards making at least $4M—Savard, Horton, Lucic, Ryder, Bergeron—and seven who take in $3.5M and up—Krecji, Sturm (Sturm’s cap will be null for the time he’s placed on LTIR).  Certainly ridding an albatross contract like Ryder’s would be ideal, but the reality of any general manager willing to take on that existing contract is a fable.

Boston Bruins odds to win the 2010-11 Stanley Cup, 20:1

Uncategorized 1 Comment

It’s out already. Just two days after the Chicago Blackhawks hoisted the Stanley Cup, Bodog.com has release early odds for next year’s NHL Champs.

The Bruins have 20:1 odds to take Lord Stanley back home to Boston for the first time since 1972. Maybe the acquisition of  Tyler Seguin or Taylor Hall will bump those odds up over the next few week.

On the bottom of the totem pole, the Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders, and Toronto Maple Leafs are the bottom dwellers akin to their 2009-10 season with 75:1 odds. The Blackhawks lead the way as their chances to repeat are 11:2; Pittsburgh Penguins have 6:1 odds; Washington Capitals 13:2; and the San Jose Sharks with 9:1 chances.

Bruins finally say ‘Thank You’ and salute fans

Uncategorized 2 Comments

Wondering what happened to the “Stick Salute” ritual at the end of Game 7? Well, for those Bruins’ fans who remained in the TD Garden after the mass exodus onto Causeway Street, and those watching at home, here you go.

Bostonbruins.com just released this video. Hopefully is brings back good memories of the 2009-10 season, and helps ease the pain of the historically, disappointing ending.

Gagne still out indefinitely

Uncategorized No Comments

An optimistic return for Game 3 of the semifinals now looks like wishful thinking for Flyers’ left-winger Simon Gagne. The 30-year-old had an MRI on his big right toe yesterday, and the prognosis for a return to the ice against the Bruins this series looks bleak.

Philadelphia’s general manager Paul Holmgren released this statement yesterday:

“Simon Gagne had a MRI on his right foot (on Friday). While the study showed signs of healing, Simon is still listed as out indefinitely. Simon will continue to do his off-ice conditioning and rehab.”

Good news for Bruins fans, but bad for Flyers fans, as Gagne remains on the shelf with Jeff Carter and Ian Laperriere. Earlier reports eyed Gagne for a reappearance for Games 4 and/or 5. If he’s not back by then, well, then the Flyers will be on borrowed time anyways.

POWER PLAY2/30/3
  • Goal: On another power play, 4-on-3, Krejci with a slap-pass shades of Derek Morris, through the slot to Recchi his third of the playoffs and 53rd of his postseason career. -75–128
  • Another reason how the NHL officiating has sucked throughout the playoffs. Milan Lucic got yanked for roughing, but it was Buffalo’s Adam Mair who cross-checked Kreji and unloaded a few shots to the back of No. 46’s head. And just seconds later, on the PK, Marco Sturm got held up — literally — at center ice by Jason Pomminville, as No. 16 and his speed would have had a clear-cut breakaway.
  • Is Wideman regressing back to his old-self? He’s only accounted for one giveaway (Wideman owes the NHL stat keeper dinner) Skating backwards and on his heels, No. 6 tried to clear the puck up the middle. But Sabres’ forward Tim kennedy intercepted the clear attempt, dished it to BC alumni Nathan Gerbe, who threaded it perfectly to a crashing Patrick Kaleta. After that goal, it was all Buffalo.
  • Vanek, who leads all Sabres with three shots on goal tonight, undressed Wideman on the Bruins blue-line for a semi-breakaway. But Rask comes up big once again, one of his seven saves of the period, and 18 of 19 in the game.
  • Boston is now 6-for-19 (31.6%) on the power play in this series, and have successfully killed-off all 20 times short.

Goal: Recchi (3) 53rd of his career

Assists: Krejci (2), Bergeron (3)

End of 20: Bruins 1, Sabres 0

HITS209
PENALTY MINUTES22
POWER PLAY1/10/1
  • The Bruins went 1-1 on the power play tonight, and are now 5-18 on the PP (27.8% proficiency) in this series. This is the first game, in six, that Boston has lit the lamp first in a game.
  • Goal: Mark Recchi took a feed from Matt Hunwick on the point, then zipped a hard pass from the half-wall to Krejci in the slot. The center tipped it past Sabres net-minder Ryan Miller low-blocker side.
  • Bruins show why their penalty kiill was ranked top-3 in the NHl during the regular season, while setting a record  for fastest three shorthanded goals on one penalty-kill. Sturm rang a wrister off the crossbar…followed by a Recchi and Danile Paille 2-on-1. The Bruins outshot the Sabres 2-1 on that PK, and have now successfully killed all 17 times short this series.
  • The Bruins began the first half of the first period aggressive, killing the Sabres momentum from Game 5. The B’s outhit the Sabres 14-5 in the first 10, and 20-9 by the intermission.
  • Speaking of Game 5 — and no shocker here — the physicality and bad-blood has carried over since their last meeting at the HSBC Arena. Zdeno Chara will begin the second period in the box for a minor roughing call — as some more funny stuff ensued once again with Paul Gaustad and Mike Grier and co.
  • The Sabres had their fair share of scoring chances throughout the first 20 minutes with 14 shots on goal. But Tuukka Rask stopped all of them and continues to be the best player dressed in Black-and-Gold. Rask has accumulated a whopping .964 save-percentage at the TD Garden in this series, thus far.

Goal: Krejci (2)

Assist: Hunwick (4), Recchi (2)
